Psalm 127

A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. A psalm of Solomon.

Unless the Lord builds a house,
    the work of the builders is wasted.
Unless the Lord protects a city,
    guarding it with sentries will do no good.
It is useless for you to work so hard
    from early morning until late at night,
anxiously working for food to eat;
    for God gives rest to his loved ones.

Children are a gift from the Lord;
    they are a reward from him.
Children born to a young man
    are like arrows in a warrior’s hands.
How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them!
    He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates.

Life is busy!  The kids are back in school.  You need to make sure they are up in the morning, dressed, eat breakfast, and get out the door to be in school on time. You need to get to work on time yourself. You and your wife/husband talk about who is taking which kid to which activity tonight – hockey practice, gymnastics, etc. You mom needs some help with a lamp that isn’t working even though she bought a new bulb. One of your friends asked if you could go for coffee; they need your help with a problem in their family. Tomorrow isn’t any less busy.

Where do you find that inner rest to cope with a busy life?

Unless the Lord builds a house,
    the work of the builders is wasted.

Aah. I need to be aware that I need God in my everyday life. I need to be asking for His advice in all my busy daily plans. It’s not just one more thing on my to-do list. It’s realizing that I need that time to be with the Lord to keep the rest of my day somewhat sane. As the pressures mount, and you get that cramped feeling in your gut caused by stress, it’s time to stop and remind yourself that God is with you. God is there wanting to keep you calm, wanting you to know that you are loved and special.

It is useless for you to work so hard
    from early morning until late at night,
anxiously working for food to eat;
    for God gives rest to his loved ones.

Learn to stop in those moments of frenzy and say a prayer. Remind yourself that God is with you and helping you every day.
