September 7 – Forgive or Carry a Grudge?

Proverbs 17: 9   (NLT)

“Love prospers when a fault is forgiven,
but dwelling on it separates close friends.”

The past two years have been challenging for many people. I think we could all agree that there seem to be more arguments among our families, friends, and even in our countries than ever before. The isolation we’ve experienced, and the mandates governments have issued seem to have made us all more angry and unsettled, more willing to argue with people. People in churches have left over disagreements on how to deal with the pandemic. The clashes politically, especially in the United States – and even in Canada – seem to be tearing our countries apart.

How do we deal with all this hostility? “Love prospers when a fault is forgiven.” As the rules around the pandemic are loosening and churches are starting their programs in full again, will we be known for our love and forgiveness?

The Bible is so clear on how we need to deal with people:

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4: 32  NASB).

“Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” (Colossians 3:12-13  NLT)

There really isn’t more to say. Reading those verses makes me totally understand God’s position on being kind and forgiving. We might disagree with someone, but we don’t have to make it the end of our relationship. As our churches begin their fall programs, let’s welcome everyone with open arms.

Our song for today is Live Like Jesus by Rhett Walker Band.
